So. In a fic that may be the fic I'm writing for [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest or may not be, Steve Rogers tells Jan Pym (Wasp, married to Hank at the time) that he is gay.

[And that he is dating Sam Wilson, because this is ME, but this is not really necessary information for the purposes of this question.]

Jan takes him clothes shopping, because what else do you do with your newly-discovered gay friend, after all?

My question for you all, because I know nothing about fashion: what do they buy? I am hoping for something appropriately hideous and 1970s, because that's when said fic is set (I mean, roughly 1970s--it's comics so I'm not worrying too much about anachronisms), but FASHIONABLY hideous and seventies, you know. Because it's Jan, and even though she's mostly dressed by comics artists who appear to know slightly less about fashion that I do, she is, in theory, a fashion designer.

Ideas, please? Pictures would be even better!

Those polyester, narrow waisted disco type shirts, in funky patterns? As seen here (http://thefashionableacademic.blogspot.com/2008/03/spendy-vintage-for-men.html)?

http://www.esquire.com/style/style-evolution-0908 If you skip forward to the 70s has some suits.

I did a Google search for "men's fashion 1970s" and found some websites, some with pictures, but most is general cultural trends, not cutting edge or high fashion stuff.

If you can get to a library, there are lots of books about the history of fashion. Most of them are about women's fashion, but you ones about men's fashion exist. Or you can see if they have any magazines in their archives that are that old. (Can't think of what magazines would have pictures of more pricey men's fashion pictured off the top of my head, though.)

Cool. I'm not sure I'm really interested in doing a lot of research (as opposed to being lazy and asking my flists), but thanks for the link and the tips.

Yeah, I was just coming up with some ideas in case the flist did not come through.

The only thing I can say is not a leisure suit? Haha, all my knowledge of 70s fashion comes from Match Game...

I think patterns were big on suits, some gawdy, but some nice like almost plaid?

Google's giving me nothing but women's clothes. :(

I cannot help you with this question (I am pretty sure I know less about clothes than even the artists), but I really enjoy the image. Of course she would take Steve shopping! Shopping is an appropriate response to all situations! And she wants Steve to look pretty for his man!

Clothes are hard! And I am glad you approve. :D

I think that Jan would probably get Steve to be a bit more experimental with his clothing than she'd initially expected -- man's an artist, after all -- but would still want to emphasize "sexy" + "manly", because... this is Jan, after all. XD

My only constructive suggestion is to check out Starsky & Hutch, I guess. The series, not the hideous movie. I'm pretty sure Starsky's jeans are tighter than Cap's costume.
