SECRET INVASION 1: for those who, after my last post, were wondering

Meh. No Fury. There was Dugan, but apparently Skrull!Dugan. I didn't like the art much, and it's feels surprisingly long since I've read either of the current Avengers titles (which isn't quite true--I did read MIGHTY #10 just recently, and the Ultron storyline before that).

Saddest of all, the WONDERFUL LINE from the prologue appears to be some sort of code-word--Skrulls are running around using it on everyone.

Although "He even loves you!" to Reed Richards was kind of funny. Skrulls/Richards OTP!

The appearance of lots of old-school versions of characters could be fun in the short-term, although if the implication of long-term Skrull-infiltration only means MILLENNIUM levels of continuity ick. (MILLENNIUM: The crossover where Perry White, the entire population of Smallville, and whoever else the writer of each title could make expendable to editorial mandate turned out to be EVIL ROBOTS! Yeah, DC doesn't mention this much for a reason.)

(It's not exactly original to them, but see Progressive Ruin via [livejournal.com profile] iamza's post for an entertaining version of the SECRET INVASION/MILLENNIUM comparison.)

Upshot: I'm back to being annoyed with the whole crossover.

The best thing about Millennium was when the writers were getting short of expendable characters (one per title were required, right?) and decided to make one guy's dog secretly an evil robot. Genius.

I'm starting to feel reassured in my decision to give this entire thing a miss, rather than being suckered into buying their crossover merely because I read some Marvel titles like I was with Civil War. I mean, I'm not that immersed in Marvel at the best of times, but I'm totally lacking any background on the whole Skrull thing. And since I cancelled my ASM subscription I think Daredevil it the only Marvel title I really follow, and I hope he won't turn out to have been some alien pod person, and I can just ignore the mess.

I think that all the appearances by the 70's characters are just there to screw with the Avengers even further and destabilize their already shaky trust. I don't think that this Secret Invasion goes back that far. If you think about it, the Skrulls didn't decide to get serious until after the Kree-Skrull War. And then they'd take even more time to apply what they learned from the Illuminati's capture to their infiltration units. So I really think they're all Skrulls.
