3 stories that should be written, the "I spent a day with [livejournal.com profile] destroythemeek and read a bunch of DeMatthies and early Gruenwald Cap Issues" edition

Project inspired by [livejournal.com profile] jubilancy's post.

1. Sam Wilson's sexuality issues, circa the 70s and/or the comics-time not-actually-70s, in which he tries to figure out how the heck to maintain credibility in his community while coming out as not just a gay or bi man, but a black man in love with a white guy. With bonus Leila, and possibly Cap dealing with his own issues in re: not understanding the seventies and/or sexuality in general.

2. 80s fic in which Arnie Roth explains to Steve that, you know, maybe Steve is, in fact, into dudes, judging from his behavior in that particular time-period.

3. Any or all fic regarding Jack Monroe's friendship or conversations with Arnie Roth. Because the concept of Cap's gay childhood best friend and the temporally-displaced, not terribly PC or with it ex-Bucky of the Fifties is fascinating, if you are me.

And in other news from Cap 284, Nick Fury loves his Walrus. <333333333

There was only one kid in South Boston who had ever taken down Dum Dum Dugan. )
Before Nick Fury acquired the eyepatch, he could be distinguished by his shirts, which were inevitably torn (or occasionally missing altogether), displaying his hairy chest of manly commando-ness to terrify the enemy and inspire his comrades!

And also terrorize the quartermasters. )

(From Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos 64 pg. 4, by Gary Friedrich, Tom Sutton, John Severin, and Jerry Feld)

Bonus! Dancing Commandos! (from #13 pg 10-11, Lee and Kirby)

Old ads: Two for body building, and one for weight-gain!

And last but not least: A random moment of Dum Dum/Izzy slash. )
Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos #45 is officially entitled "The War Lover" and is described on Wikipedia as "shaded exploration of a trigger-happy soldier and the line drawn, even in war, between killing and murder. Daring for the time, when majority public sentiment still supported the undeclared Vietnam War, the story balanced present-day issues while demonstrating that even in what is referred to as "a just war", a larger morality prevails."

This is true enough. What Wikipedia *doesn't* mention is that it is also a very touching tale of Dum Dum Dugan's devotion to his fedoras.

Witness! Rather a lot of fedora scans )
