I've got a lot more headcanon for G1, so I'll do that.

Shockwave:

1. At some point during the four million years, he started making little transforming toys to entertain himself. First Megatron (Shockwave can make one that actually sizeshifts), and then himself and Optimus Prime and Soundwave and...it sort of exploded from there. But he had to stop making them or playing with them long before he made recontact, because of declining energy reserves.

2. He's dedicated to Megatron, and believes both in his cause and that he's the most logical leader for it, but ultimately he likes him much better at a distance. Losing him for four million years was way too much distance, but he's much happier ruling a planet (or two! or more!) for him, getting regular shipments of energon in exchange for technology and troops, and having him show up maybe a couple times a year to express his appreciation, than he would be working directly under him. This is only partly because living with Megatron usually also means living with Starscream.

3. Only sometimes true in my headcanon: Cyclonus killed him during a Decepticon power struggle just after the battle with Unicron.

4. He spent four million years designing things that, for the most part, he didn't have the energy resources to build, and there wasn't nearly enough time in the twenty years pre-Unicron to put them into practice. Post-Unicron, Soundwave has some of the blueprints, and the Constructicons have others, but a lot of them were simply lost and quite a bit of what was left is written in a compressed form that only Shockwave could really interpret.
