I had serious doubts about picking up Iron Man/Captain America: Casualties of War this week, because the Civil War crossover has been turning into an alternately hilarious and cringeworthy trainwreck, and I've not been real pleased with how *either* Tony or Cap has been behaving lately.
But man, I'm glad I'm yielded to 'shipper weekness, because this? is pure character porn. And more than just that, it makes me feel better about the crossover than I have since--man, even before Civil War 1, which was actually a pretty awesome issue on a totally different level, probably back to the JMS Spider-Man issues that
rabican used to sell me on it in the first place.
I still can't take the larger premise of the story seriously--dude, they're fighting about to what extent genre conventions are going to be allowed to apply and keep pretending it's about Real World Politics--but this one-shot? Is about the characters. Larger-than-life heroes having personal and--yes, ideological--conflicts, and placing them--not in a spurious and occasionally downright offensive 'real-world' context--but within the history of the the Marvel universe itself, and their own long history together.
And then there's the porn. Lots and lots of yummy (if not quite literal) porn.
Sadly, I have no scans, and the stuff that's showed up so far is not really the yummy parts but there's a pose or two in there that I really want to iconify. Christos Gage, I *love* you.
