Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos #45 is officially entitled "The War Lover" and is described on Wikipedia as "shaded exploration of a trigger-happy soldier and the line drawn, even in war, between killing and murder. Daring for the time, when majority public sentiment still supported the undeclared Vietnam War, the story balanced present-day issues while demonstrating that even in what is referred to as "a just war", a larger morality prevails."

This is true enough. What Wikipedia *doesn't* mention is that it is also a very touching tale of Dum Dum Dugan's devotion to his fedoras.

Witness!

The splash page, establishing much of the broader context, as well as the all-important fedora plot:

Ryan, the eponymous "War Lover" has caused the Howlers to miss their plane. Dum Dum contemplates his fedora:

"WHIT WHIT": the sound of a fedora being yet *further* abused.

Dum Dum, I'm afraid you're no Lady Godiva.

Nick's had enough because Ryan keeps trying to get them killed, and generally violating the rules of war. Dum Dum, well:

Once they finally get back to their base in England, Nick goes on a date!

A brawl inevitably breaks out between Fury and Ryan.

But all ends happily!

Those Howlers, they love their corporal. But alas, this all means that Dum Dum hasn't actually been wearing the same fedora all through the war and his SHIELD days.
