So. As some of you know, for awhile now I've been crossposting my entries from Dreamwidth.

But some of you don't know! And there are exciting features of Dreamwidth that I didn't know about until very recently!

Basically, Dreamwidth is like LJ. Only better.

It has exciting features!

  • 6K character limit for comments--much better for kinkmemes and porn battles and the like.

  • 50K character limit for posts.

  • 15 icon slots for free accounts, and the ability to change icon keywords without the icon reverting to default in older posts.

  • Awesome cross-posting ability, which would be why I crosspost from here in the first place. You can edit posts across multiple sites (Dreamwidth, Livejournal, Insanejournal, Journalfen, whatever) from here as well as making them, and there's simple code for indicating usernames and community names from different sites.

  • No ads. Not even in free accounts. Not even for extra special features. In particular, no ads that infect your computer with malware.

  • Less unscheduled downtime, even though it's newer than LJ and has fewer people working there.

And then there are the "Dreamdwidth's management is better than Livejournal's" issues:

  • See above on ads and malware.

  • Much, much better on communication and transparency; yet to be caught lying to the users (as Livejournal has).

  • Dreamwidth's gender options include "other" as well as "male," "female," and "rather not say." See here and here for recent Livejournal schenanigans on the matter. (Also a transparency issue, as Livejournal slips these changes in unannounced.)

  • Dedicated to protecting their users' free expression; won't yield to demands to remove legal content provided by their users, even when their suppliers do. See also: LJ's strikethrough 2007.

(Thanks for [personal profile] katarik and [personal profile] thingswithwings via [personal profile] katarik for help coming up with the lists--and letting me know about the malware and the expanded Dreamwidth limits in particular.)

Anyway. The major downsides to Dreamwidth currently are (a) there aren't as many people there--hence this post!--and (b) since they're standing up for their content, currently they lack a credit card processor, so paying for accounts is only possible via check or money order. But if you want a free account to try them out, I'll be happy to give you an invite code. (Or talk someone else into doing so, since I'm a little short on them.)

And check me out on Dreamwidth at [personal profile] caia!

I actually have had a DW account for a while and have been meaning to start switching over but never gotten around to it... the force of habit is strong.

I do have an account over there and I like what they do, but all my friends are on LJ and 95% of them have no intention of leaving, so...

Yeah, that's the problem with social networking. Me, I've got friends who are Dreamwidth-only now, so I'm committed to both sites at the moment.

If you still have an invite code, I'd appreciate one. Been hearing good things about Dreamwidth and have been wanting to check it out for some time now, but kept forgetting about to do so.
